Oak Island Lighthouse
Our History

First Baptist Church of Oak Island is a member of the Brunswick Baptist Association, the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and the Southern Baptist Convention.

Our church was established in 1960 as a mission of Southport Baptist Church, located in Southport NC.   Construction of our first building began in October of that year.  The first service in the new building was held on January 1, 1961, with 47 people in attendance.

The mission was duly constituted as Oak Island Baptist Church on April 9, 1967, with 43 charter members.  A learning/activity building was added in 1972 and in 1979 the name of the church was changed to First Baptist Church of Oak Island.

The island has experienced steady growth through the years which has challenged the members and leadership of the church to find ways to minister to the growing community.

Planning for the current sanctuary began in 1981; and the first worship service in the new facility was held on March 24, 1985.  Renovations to the learning/activity building were completed in 2005.  This renovation greatly expanded the fellowship hall space and added classroom space and a youth lounge area above the fellowship hall.

The current members and leaders owe a huge debt of gratitude to all those who worked so diligently to establish this church.   It is our prayer that this church may continue to be a place where the true Light of Oak Island shines for all to see and that some may come safely to the shores of enternal life.
